How To Save Water in Your Garden and Yard.
By ChrisjobSummer water needs lead to shortages in some places, and increased water bills everywhere. Beyond bigger investments like rain barrels (which really aren't that expensive or inconvenient) and gray water systems, here's few tips from CasaSugar to better use water in your lawn and garden.
- Raise your mower's blade. Apparently, longer grass needs less water.
- Don't water unless the soil is dry 1 1/2 inches down
- Water your garden early
- Clump plants together for less surface area (really? this seems liked you'd use just as much, but with less efficiency for the plants)
- Use a soaker hose
- Don't water the plants (foliage), water the soil around the base of the plant.
- Use a saucer under potted plants.

Something else to consider is using a rain barrel to collect water for your flower gardens. An average roof collects an amazing amount of water. A friend did this and she has been able to water her front flower gardens entirely from one rain barrel connected to a soaker hose.
As for soaker hoses you will get better absorption if you DO NOT lay them on top of the ground. Much of the moisture that seeps out of the soaker hose will not make it in to the ground if it is very hot. It is better to buy soaker hoses that you plan to leave permanently in place. Lay them out around the plants, or as close to the roots as you can and cover with mulch. The mulch will not only help retain moisture but keep the roots cool too so there is not as much shock to the plants during really hot days.

Less surface area = less evaporation.
I changed my garden over to a "square foot" garden this year. MUCH less water needed and the plants are doing wonderfully!
