Will you be giving hand-crafted gifts for the holidays?

By DIY Maven

created on: 12/11/08

In our local paper this weekend, there was an article entitled "GIFT TRIMMING: No money for gifts? No Problem. Here are some ways to fulfill your holiday gift list without resorting to stealing or crafting" complete with a picture of a cute, little, hand-knitted cell phone cozy. My first and only thought was resorting to crafting? I immediately copped an attitude and turned the page. I didn't even want to read the author's penny » READ MORE

Someone will know how to do this...

By leslieinbham

I have several handmade by grandma pieces of lace, doily-like, I suppose and I want to display them on a wall as a series.  The backpieces are identical, just set of linen pieces and I'm leaning toward a tapestry/texture-y mount, e.g., neither framed, nor behind glass.  While leaning is fun, I can't figure out the steps to get it all from pieces to piece.  Can't figure how to mount the lace onto the linen so that both retain shape » READ MORE

Do you dress like you decorate?

By DIY Maven

Last week on Top Design, guest judge and my favorite OCD sufferer Jeff Lewis made the observation that one could match the designers’ rooms to what they wore to the judging. For instance Nathan rocked an edgy sport coat which just added to his sensuality (although last week his room sort of lacked both, except for the nails);

Ondine was lovely in a gathered skirt and simple top, a reflection of her graphic yet feminine black and » READ MORE

Help Me Learn How To Demo and Re-Tile

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created on: 10/16/08

It's time to eliminate my handpainted tiles from the backsplash.  I've never taken down tiles from a vertical surface and we've only put down floor tiles.  Is it possible to get these off without much wall damage and if there is repair, how hard is it?  I am craving some white subway tiles, new paint, new art, reupholstered chairs and THEN I'LL BE HAPPY!!!  If there are any really good tutorials out there for backsplashes, send them » READ MORE

Get The Sticky Stuff Off A Mason Jar

By lilybee

Sure it sounds simple, but I've just spent HOURS picking and peeling and breaking my nails. Does anybody have a fool-proof, no-picking-required method for getting the paper residue and sticky goo off of jars? I know that I could just buy empty ones but I have A BUNCH hanging around and I need to unpeel them to use for the flower arrangements at Ted's Naming Ceremony. Help me Curbly-Wan you're my nail's only hope!

I hate duvet covers

By megrockstar

I have a gorgeous duvet, but when I pin the corners the down comforter still sinks and it ends up that I virtually have two sheets. Why is this? Does it do this for everyone? And how can I fix it?

Flooring-Help Please

By YabbaDabbaDelicious

I have just added a new level to my home and will not be installing the flooring until next year.  If I was to sand and seal the plywood floor now would that create problems in the future when I'm ready to install the flooring?

Any and all info. greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

How Not Where? - Updated

By lilybee

I've been feeling a bit philosophical about houses, homes and the way that we live. In part prompted by a home that I sometimes walk past.

It's this place here. I think it's beautiful, with that mottled red-ish brick and great sash windows. The gorgeous fire escape garden, beautiful and clever paint colours and good accessories all make it look like it's inhabited by someone who loves and takes pride in their home.
