How to Make A Macrame' Bracelet (or Necklace)

Get out your hemp twine. if you don't want to use hemp there is a wide variety of colored cord you can chose from. the thicker the cord the bigger your bracelet or necklace.
Cut off two long strands.
Take one of the strands, fold it in half and loop it over a rounded stick such as a paint brush or pencil.
Do the same to the other strand. Now, you have four strands hanging down.
Take the right strand, pull it over the two inner strands and under the left strand.
Pull the left strand behind the two inner strands and through the loop created by the right strand.
This is a half square knot.
Pull it tight to the top.
and repeat those steps over and over and over...You will get this twisted look.
Once you are about half way done, get out a special shell or bead and pull the 2 inner (called the "anchors") and pull them through the hole in your shell or bead.
Continue to tie half square knots until you have reached your desired length.
Now, remove the stick from the loops and pull the anchor strands to make your end loops a little smaller.
Pull two of your strands through the end loops.
Put it on your wrist and tie a knot.
And you are done!
For a necklace, just make it longer. Add more beads or shells or go without any at all...hey, it's up to you!

Another way to keep the bracelet/necklace steady is to stick a safety pin thru the fastener loops and then pin it to you jeans, shorts, or anything else you can pin it on to.

Macrame? This is a sennit (or sinnet, depending on where you live) - beloved of rope-working seamen for a very long time. But a great idea nonetheless - thanks Threadbanger for those very clear instructions and photos. I often try to teach people this technique - hope you don't mind my borrowing your instructions in future.<G>
The sennit can be straight or twisted, depending on whether the loops are woven on alternate sides or (like this one) on one side only, and beads can be placed over the central twin strands before each loop.
Also good for making lanyards for bosuns' pipes, binoculars, or - these days - mobile phones and cameras. Experiment with different gauges and colours of line - I've even made very delicate ones out of embroidery thread.
And a great way to occupy your fingers if, like me, you feel guilty 'just' watching the TV...
